Golfers asked to support caddies as KGU shut all golf clubs

Following the orders from the government through the ministry of health to lock down all golf clubs in the country over the spread of coronavirus, Kenya Golf Union (KGU) has suspended all tournaments in all golf clubs in the country for 30 days.

The federation has also suspended all handicaps in the country for the same period.

In a statement from KGU chairman Antony Murage read: Clubs organizing all formal competitions to help the spread of coronavirus should not hold any competition require handicaps for that period.”

But Murage said that golfers can play but they should not use caddies.

“Golfers can either play alone or in twos or threes. The starting intervals must be at least 10 minutes and golfers must not gather at the starters. They should also strictly observe social distancing. Clubs should only be open to members and should not allow guests or reciprocation.”

However Murage asked golfers to set up a caddies financial support kitty.

“Clubs are asked to set up caddie welfare kitty in support of caddies affected by the suspension of competitions,” Murage added in a letter to golf clubs. He said clubs should strictly adhere to the directives which include closure of club houses.

“All club houses are closed forthwith. Golfers must not be allowed to access club houses for any services whatsoever,” noted Murage.
