Juniors Dominic Ndigit, Lydia Jeruto lights AK meeting in Mumias

World Under 18 walk bronze medalist Dominic Ndigit walked to victory at the 5th leg of Athletics Kenya meeting held today at Mumias Sports Complex.

It was a good outing for world under 18 800m silver medalist Lydia Jeruto who double in the championships winning 800m and finishing third in 400m.

Ndigit, who missed to walk in Eldoret last week, said he was frustrated after he borrowed money from his mother to travel to Eldoret but due to lack of official, he failed to compete but in Mumias, it was a double blessing-winning the race and lowering his time.

Ndigit said his dream will come true when he will walk the 10km under forty minutes. At the same time he lowered his time of 41:25.78 to 40:52.5.

As he targets Africa Athletics championships in Assaba, Nigeria, Ndigit said he is targeting to walk under 40 minutes.

“I had good timing today and I want to extend this ahead of any championships. Imagine breaking my own time, it is a plus for me,” said the Form three student at Kiendege secondary school.

Ndigit was followed by Stephen Mutuku (41:19.1) beating Erick Shikuru (44:13.8) and Jimmy Oroni (44:55.1).

Sylvia Kemboi competed with herself, seeking for better time crossing the finish line in 48:15.4.

It was a good day for reigning world U18 silver medallist Lydia Jeruto. The Baringo based runner won in her favourite 800m and immediately she returned to the track, without rest and finished 3rd in 400m.

“I won today’s race following my intense training. This will be great for me since I am using this event as part of my training ahead of major races,” said the former student of Sinonin High school.

Jeruto clocked 2:09.2 followed by Vivian Chelang’at (2:09.7) and Angela Ndung’u in 2:10.7) in 800m.

In 400m, she was third clocking 59.4 behind the winner Evangeline Kathenya (54.9) and second placed Nevian Muchiri in 56.8.

In men’s 400m, David Kapirande won in 47.6 ahead of Geoffrey Mutai (47.9) and Alphas Kishoyan in 48.2.

Edwin Meli won the two lap race in men’s category timing 1:47.7 relegating Job Kinyor (1:48.5) and Alphas Kishoyan to third clocking 1:49.0).

After finishing 5th in Friday’s 5,000m race, Josephat Kipchirchir won today’s 10,000m men in 28:46.2 ahead of Linus Kiplagat (28:49.2), Gilbert Kimunyan (28:51.4) and Simon Letaya timing 29:02.7.
