Reigning Commonwealth Games 800m champion Wycliffe Kinyamal and reigning All Africa Games 10,000m silver medalist Gracemary Wanjiru will be hoping to cut into Kenya ahead of the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar next month.
Kinyamla, who surprised the world when he clinched Commonwealth Games title in Gold Coast, Australia, said he is well prepared for the national championships and trials slated for Nyayo stadium.
Global Sports Communication based runner fit in the shoes of world 800m record holder David Rudisha to keep Kenya in the map as a powerhouse in the two-lap race.
As much as he is prepared well for the trials, he said the competition will be too stiff because many athletes will be yearning for the slot.
“I can’t say that I will win but I will do my best because it will be competition, not a selection. But I want to cut into the team, which if I make trust me I will come with a medal from Doha for the country,” said Kinyamal who has dominated in Diamond League series.
He added that anyone who will make it to the trials has equal opportunities to cut the ticket.
“Anyone who will make the team has a contract with the country and each runner will be running his heart out. The runner will be flying Kenyan flag which is good for any runner though I believe in myself for glory,” added Kinyamal.
Kinyamal, who trains alongside world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge, former New York marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor, two-time world marathon champion is likely to face Ferguson Rotich and Emmanuel Rotich.
Wanjiru on her side said she will be chasing the slot which will be highly contested but she was confident of making it to Doha.
“Am well prepared for the trials though it won’t be a walk in the park, said the track mistress.
