After setting the record as the first lady to win a Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) title, Naomi Wafula will be lining up to defend her Kiambu Open title set for this weekend at the par 72 Kiambu golf club.
Coming from Vipingo Ridge, Wafula was the surprise winner of the title after beating Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga on the play-off after the duo recorded a two under par 214. They were subjected to holes 1, 2, 8 and 9 where they tied. The sudden death was on hole 18, whwre they both parred then subjected on hole 18 again with Wafula firing in a par with Nsubuga a bogey to hand her victoty.
The Kiambu Open, is set to take place from 15th to 17th November 2024, marking the third edition of the tournament with home player Michael Karanga winning the first edition in 2022
Wafula will be among the 78 golfers drawn for the event that tees off on Friday to Sunday.
The tournament will feature an exciting mix of seasoned players and rising stars led by Karanga, Elvis Muigua, Michael Ngene, and Stephen Kiaro, who are expected to deliver top-tier performances.
It has also attracted a strong lineup of lady golfers including local standout Joyce Wanjiru, Riddima Singh from India, and Kellie Gachaga of Karen Country Club, all of whom are eager to showcase their skills and challenge for top honors.
With the KAGC series heading into the homestretch, series leader Karanga with an impressive 722 points, is followed by John Lejirma with 646 points as Elvis Muigua sits in third with 449.3 points.
New champions such as Elly Barno who won The Nandi Bears Open, William Odek who won the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship in Nyali, Josephat Rono recent winner of the Golf Park Open last weekend, Titus Okwong from Uganda, the Tea Fields Trophy in Kericho, Felix Dusabe from Rwanda Mt. Kenya Championship in Nyeri, Michael Alunga from Uganda, Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship at the Windsor Hotel and Country Club, and John Kamais at the NCBA Nyanza Open in Kisumu.
