Over 700 athletes will be converging at the Nyayo National stadium for the national trials ahead of Open Africa Masters Athletics championships that will be held at the same venue.
According to Athletics Kenya Masters Secretary General Rose Tata Muya, the trials has attracted top athletes in search of slots to represent the country at the Open Athletics Masters set for November 22-27 as Kenya will be seeking to defend their title they last won in 2019 in Tunisia.
The two day event starts on Friday to Saturday.
“We shall be hosting a big number of athletes to select a formidable team that will help us retain the continental title we won two years ago. This journey has been long but successful,” said Tata who competed in the 400m hurdles.
In Tunisia, Kenya won a total of 40 medals, 31 gold, 8 silver and a bronze to top the continent even after other continents competed at the championships.
She added that they are targeting at least 40 athletes after the trials where the minimum entry should be 35 years and maximum 80 years.
“With the current situation with COVID-19, it is a challenge in transportation and accommodating such athletes. We had to write to various counties to support their athletes but so far it’s only Elgeyo Marakwet that supported theirs,” said Tata.
