Serem in early preparation for Budapest

Former world under 20 3,000m steeplechase champion Amos Serem has set his focus to compete at the World championships set for Budapest, Hungary.

“This is the first race of the year and I want to ensure that 2023 is a successful one on track. I came here to run 2km in search of speed-work and training for the year. I wanted to run well in search of shape ahead of the world championships in Budapest. That is my major focus this year and this was my first race of the year,” said Serem.

He said that losing both world championships and Olympic Games 3,000m steeplechase titles to Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, was embarrassing to our heritage.

“We want to return our heritage, the 3,000m steeplechase back home after missing out in two important championships and Olympic games. Coming here today, I was well prepared to compete in this race because I want to start the 2023 on a high note even after losing the title and coming third, I was satisfied,” said Serem who was third at the Athletics Kenya Central Rift championships held on Saturday at the Lobo Village.  He was third in 5:25.0 behind the winner Lukas Kiprop (5:18.0) and second placed Vincent Koech in 5:24.5.

With his third finish, he was named as a reserve runner in relays ahead of national championships set for Ruiru next weekend.

“I did not manage to make the team for world cross country but I also want to focus on the Diamond leagues in May as part of the 2023 Budapest show. I will also be competing at the Athletics Kenya track and field weekend meetings and run well,” he said
