Singida sink AFC Leopards on Penalties

Tanzanian side Singida United advanced to the semi-final match courtesy of penalty shootout against AFC Leopards in the fourth match of the second edition of Sportpesa Sper Cup played today at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.

The Singida won the match 4-2 in a post match spot kicks, putting off the much awaited Mashemeji derby between AFC Leopards and Kenya Premier champions Gor Mahia.

The winners, Singida will play Super Cup defending champions Gor Mahia on Thursday in the first semi final. Gor Mahia beat Jeshi La Kujenga Uchumi (J.K.U) 3-0 on Sunday at the same venue.

Kenyan side Leopards and Singida played out to a barren draw in the normal time but with Whyvone Isuza missing to convert a penalty on the 68thminute when Peter Manyika, the Singida keeper saving his shot.

Jaffary Owiti was brought down in the box by Singida’s Salum Kipaga. Manyika saved Isuza’s penalty before bouncing back to Ray Omondi’s rebound. The ball fell kindly to Omondi once again from the save, still Manyika save again.

The 13 time KPL champions, Ingwe missed to convert their penalties through baker Lukoonya who hit the cross bar, as Moses Mburu’s shot went wide after their keeper Ezekiel Owade had saved the first penalty by Ally Kenny.

Singida’s side convereted theirs through Shafik Batambuze, Adam Miraji, Danny Lyanga and Sumbi Elynyesia.

Ingwe had an even better opportunity two minutes later when Brian Marita raced away from his markers on the right before slicing in a cross back, but Isuza and Omondi clashed going for the same ball as the cross fell on Owiti at the back-post but the youngster’s shot at goal was well handled by Manyika.

The second half turned out to be a Peter Manyika show, the Tanzanian keeper standing tall in the Singida goal making crucial saves.
