Chepngetich, Bungoma Stars, Mali Mali and Makunga dominated Bingwafest Western Kenya chapter

The reigning Africa Games 10,000m champion Janet Chepngetich, Bungoma Stars and Mali Mali FC dominated Bingwafest Western Kenya chapter over the weekend.

All winners in men and women teams pocketed Sh1 million, with Sh500,000 and Sh250,000 going to the second and third-place finishers.

With a banquet of sports, the competitive events included athletics, football, 3×3 basketball, and rugby, captivating enthusiastic crowds and setting a high bar for future editions at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County.

In the three day championships, day one marked the track and field with Chepng’etich winning the double medals in the 10,000m and 5000m.

The sprints were fiercely contested, with upstart Meshack Babu and former national 100m champion Eunice Kadogo winning the 100m titls.

Team Kenya captain at the 2024 World Cross country championships in Belgrade, Serbia who won gold in relays Kyumbe Munguti and Josephine Chelang’at triumphed in the 1500m.

Munguti alongside Virginia Nyambura, Purity Chepkirui and Reynold Kipkorir won the gold after clocking 22:15 ahead of Ethiopia with 22:43 with Great Britain winning silver at 23:00 in Belgrade.

In the 3×3 basketball, Waingo Basketball edged out Jao Garments in overtime for the title while the Aces won the ladies title after beating Snack Pick Buddies.

In football men, Bungoma Stars FC and Mali Mali FC clinched the men and women titles respectively at the finals.

Bungoma were 1-0 winners against Lurambi side AP Seals FC from Kakamega as Malava outfit Mali Mali FC emerged victorious with a 2-1 win against Kakamega Starlets.

Makunga RFC took the honours in both men and women in the rugby 10s.
