Former rugby player turned 100m runner, Juma wants to excel in athletics

A new dawn beckons forising Kenyan 100m athlete, Tyson Juma, after he received a major financial boost upon emerging the Western Region Tujiamini Gold Winner.

With aspirations to conquer the short distances, Tyson’s athletics career has taken an exciting and even more challenging turn for the young lad who is ranked 5th nationally in the sprints discipline.

“I am happy and grateful to emerge victorious with the Tujiamini gold award considering the high number of applications. Also, I intend to use the winnings to cater for my upcoming training camp in Europe for better timings,” said Tyson.

Most recently, Tyson was forced to embrace new learning after failing to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics trials where he finished 5th in a time of 10.40 seconds.

With a personal best record of 10.30, Juma has lined up alongside the nation’s greats who continuously challenge him in the trade

However, this has not always been the case for the up-and-comer who initially played rugby for about 10 years before making a sudden exit after a career-ending injury.

Rugby was a sport that he effortlessly excelled in and even featured for the national under-20 side, Chipu, back in 2019.

“Back in 2013, I started with age-grade rugby at Shamas rugby club and progressed up until two years ago when I got a skull depression while playing rugby thus the transition to sprints.”

Storm Trentham, Director of DBA Africa, praised Juma’s dedication and rapid progress in athletics. “Tyson’s journey speaks for itself. Having been in athletics for just about three years, he has shown immense potential, and the winnings will go a long way in advancing his ambition,” said Trentham.

Forging ahead, Juma remains optimistic about his future. Having debuted in the national team this year and participated in high-level competitions, he is poised for a bright career.
