Kenya started well in the Davis Cup that kicked off today in Cairo, Egypt.
Kenyans Ismail Changawa, and Albert Njogu outshone Rwanda’s Niyigena Etienne and Karenzi Bertin in the singles matches as Kevin Cheruiyot and Ibrahim Kibet beat Joshua Muhire and Joseph Mfashingabo in the doubles match with a 3-0 win in the pool B opener.
Njogu, ranked 308 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings beat Etienne as Changawa ranked 1893 in the ITF Singles rankings, outclassed Bertin in straight sets of 7-6(4), 6-2.
In the doubles match, Cheruiyot and Kibet thrashed Muhire and Mfashingabo in straight sets of 6-4, 6-2 to complete the sweep.
In the second set, Cheruiyot and Kibet breezed past Muhire and Mfashingabo.
The pool B consists of Ghana, Rwanda and Mozambique while hosts Egypt lead pool A alongside Algeria and Benin.
Kenya play the second match against Mozambique on Thursday with top two teams advancing to the semis, with the winner of Group A facing the runner-up of Group B, and the winner of Group B facing the runner-up of Group A.
