Kiplagat to chase first medal for Kenya as World championships start in Doha

Edna Kiplagat will lead Visiline Jepkesho and Ruth Chengetich the first medal for the country at the World Championships that starts on Friday in Doha, Qatar.

Kiplagat will be chasing her fourth medals when she lines up in Doha in women’s marathon team where athletes will be running at midnight.

According to the release, about 70 athletes will be chasing the title to be run under the floodlight with waterfront at the Corniche connecting Doha Bay and Doha City Centre, set against the capital city’s towering skyline.

The temperature by that time is expected to have dropped from the predicted daytime range of 35C and above.

Kiplagat sits second with championships best time of 2:25.44 set in Moscow in 2013 after a 2:25:15 record by China’s Bai Xue.

The two time London marathon champion won in Daegu (2:28:43) in 2011 before defending the title in Moscow two years.

Mare Dibaba (2:27.35) in Beijing and defending champion Rose Rose Chelimo of Bahrain won in London two years in 2017 timing 2:27:11 after relegating Kiplagat to silver denying her a hat trick.
