Former Africa 800m junior champion Lydia Nasimiyu Wafula successfully launched her marathon career with a win at this year’s 15th edition of MTN Marathon in Kampala, Uganda today.
Running on home ground,Joshua Chemutai won the men’s race.
The track mistress has been influential track and pace-setting for world best track runners before taking up marathon where she launched her first marathon during the inaugural Eldoret City Marathon in April.
After finishing a distance 25th position at Eldoret City, she went ahead to finish 5th at Iten marathon but luck came her way to claim the MTN marathon title timing 2:44.59.
The prison warden was her biggest win in career after edging out Rael Kimaiyo Japyator to second in 2.48.59.
Speaking from Uganda, Wafula said she was a delighted runner after edging out top names in marathon.
“Am happy to have won my first marathon though the weather was too hot but the course was good,” said the 30 year old runner from Iten.
“I just wanted to compete the race, though I had pain in my back,” said Wafula.
Wafula has paced for Helen Obiri to run her world best at the Doha Diamond league in 2014 timing 8:20.68 in 3,000.
