Eldoret club chairman Dr. Florence Murgor won the Lelesta cum Rivatex Charity golf tournament played on nine Eldoret golf club on Saturday.
Handicap 19 player fired 41 stable ford points to claim the title after battling to running course due to the dryness as former chairman Hellen Yego was in second position with 40 points before George Njoroge completed the top three positions.
She said that God gave her an opportunity to close the year with a good spirit after preparing well for the tournament.
“In previous games I had a problem with putting. I always over shoot because the greens are very dry and the ball runs so fast. At the same time, I was energetic this morning,” said Murgor.
She added that she has been training well as well as other golfers keeping in mind health protocols set by the ministry of health.
“The club’s growth of golf is high and members are so motivated since they have been practicing, keeping in mind the ministry of health guidelines,” she added.
She echoed the presence of junior golfers who are giving older generations a run for their money.
“As the chairman, we really appreciate any sponsor in our club during this COVID-19 period. Probably, we missed golf for two weekends, but we have done something among ourselves,” she said.
The inaugural tournament was to raise funds for former servicemen and women injured in the line of duty.
Eldoret Club Golf captain Geoffrey Kitiwa said the tournament had raised over Kshs 21,000 to go towards the charity.
“Instead of golfers registering with the usual Kshs 700, they had to part with kshs 1,000 with the extra kshs 300 going to the charity, which is a goof course for everyone,” said Kitiwa.
Rivatex East Africa Managing Director Thomas Kipkurgat said that the textile firm used the event to market their products.
Back into the game, Murgor started on a good note, firing birdie in the second hole par 3 dropping two in one and four bogeyed in third, 6th, 7th and 9th as she parred in 5th and 8th in the inward nine.
On resumption, she dropped one in 10th,11th and 12th, dropped two in 13th, recovered well with pars in 14th and 15th before dropping one in 16th and 17th and concluded the tournament with a par on 18th par 5.
Parit Sanghrajka and former lady captain Esther Chumo wee the winners for longest drive men and women while John Barorot won the nearest to the pin prize.
With 23 points each, Kiptoo Koros and James Komen were first and second nine winners respectively
