North Rift region will have a representative at next year’s Kenya Volley league from Uasin Gishu County, that was formed over the weekend during a three day volleyball tournament held at Eldoret polytechnic ground.
Having the best players in all national league teams from the region, North Rift has not had a team that plays top flight volleyball in the country but come next year, they will be competing courtesy of County’s team.
The team will comprise players from all corners of the lager Uasin Gishu County where players were selected from thirty teams that competed in the tournament seeking to get a formidable team to play both at national tournaments and volleyball league.
Deputy Sports organizing secretary, North Rift region Stephen Radido, who was selecting best players from each department, said he has selected best players from all thirty teams that presented a competitive challenge against each other.
“These young boys will be eligible to play at national level since their volleyball skills are top class and this tournament has presented the best solution for youth employment and playing at the national league and national tournament, will be exposing their talents that has been idling in villagers,” said Radido.
He added that many players have come from the region and played at both national and international class citing Rwandan national coach Paul Bitok, Lydia Maiyo, Mercy Moim among others who were discovered in such like tournaments.
“Such events have produced superlative players who have been very instrumental in volleyball progress,” added Radido.
Radido added that though they have qualified to play at the national tournaments and league, this year they may only compete at the tournaments and not the league.
“The selected team will not compete at this year’s national league since it is in progress and it is almost over but they will be competing in the remaining national tournaments,” confirmed Radido.
But it was a great day for Simat, a village that has produced world beating sportsmen and women by winning the title after beating Kiplombe three long straight sets of 26-24, 27-25 and 30-28.
The winners won against Tarakwa in five-setter-thriller of 19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-15 and 10-15 while Kiplombe won against Tulwet 3-1 (21-25, 26-28, 25-22 and 22-25).
