Francis Bowen broke the world record after winning gold in the men’s 5,000m at the ongoing World Masters Athletics Championships’ in Gothenburg, Sweden.
At 50 years, the show at the Ullevi Stadium, was good for Bowen yesterday after setting the men’s 5000m final, cruising to victory in a World Masters record time of 14:51.27 in front of a charged crowd.
“I am happy for this victory and above all the world record in this category for the Masters. For sure, it feels nice when you win and that is usually a testament of dedication in training. More so, for Masters running, it is a show for sure that age should not be a limit for people to exercise or train. What I can tell my friends is that their physical wellbeing is their health,” Bowen said in a post-race interview.
Limuru-based Kenneth Mburu Mung’ara settled for a silver medal after clocking 15:14.24 while Spaniard Julio Bardavio Atienza settled for bronze medal.
